I think I had my first Internet crush when I came across who’s only to be known as Becky C. She describes herself as a, “sapphic post-modern neo-feminist libertarian cyberpunk” and judging by her addictive writing style, I might even say that’s an understatement. Anyway, she’s not an SEO nor is she active in the Search Marketing industry but when it comes to Google and some of their bullshit, she tells it like it is. I can’t remember but I’m sure I first came across her blog when I was scouring the web for material around Goolag (you haven’t tried it yet? Install it NOW idiot) and came across her post, “Google Censorship and the Google Gulag“. Instantly hooked.
Ok enough of the ass kissing (really though, can you blame me?) and to the reason I’m writing this post. I’ve been using Goolag since I first found the download link. It’s really quite amazing and very simple in functionality. Just to be 100% clear, this is how it works. If I input the domain, “adammoro.net”, it will append, “site:adammoro.net” to the list of 1400+ Google dorks found in the Google Hacking Database and run through all (or only the ones you select) of those queries to tell you which ones were successful (meaning which ones returned results with your site present). Google dorks are advanced Google queries that return results that can and often do lead to sensitive information being gathered from the websites found in Google’s search results (i.e. password files). So it makes sense for webmasters to run their site(s) through this thing to make sure they’re not vulnerable, right? Wrong. Well at least Google thinks so. I understand that running through all those queries uses up their resources but please! I thought their motto was, “do no evil.” What in the hell do they call indexing and PROVIDING information that can be used against you and then not letting you easily (no, practically) protect yourself against the problem THEY have created? People like Eric Schmidt and Matt Cutts don’t deserve this power. And don’t give me this, “well who else would you want to control all that information…at least they aren’t like Microsoft?” bullshit. They are JUST like Microsoft. The only difference is what they’re monopolizing. Oh and free sandwiches…well that just makes all the difference in the world!
So that’s it Google. I’m done playing by your rules. Your hypocrisy of promoting ethical business practices has finally reached my tipping point. So have it your way. Ethics just left the building.
Oh and if by some crazy chance one of you Matt Cutts lovers is still reading this, let me make something very clear. MATT CUTTS IS NOT YOUR FRIEND AND HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. As much as you want to believe that, you are nothing to him but a marketing tool. Unless you’re someone like Danny Sullivan or Philipp Lensen, you’re short one friend.
